In its commitment to be an organization that empowers and contributes to positive change, Bank Sohar recently welcomed 120 students from Indian School Muscat (ISM) to several branches in Muscat. The bank took youth on tours to get a feel of a professional environment in full operation, followed by sessions offering an introduction to banking, financial management, Bank Sohar’s history, products and services. During their visit, students also gained insight on career prospects in various banking related disciplines, helping them to make important decisions on their future occupation and higher education.
Commenting on the visit, Mr. Ahmed Al Musalmi, CEO of Bank Sohar, said, “Such visits from local school students are important in delivering insights that will help to inform their future and also promote financial prudence, as well as a baseline understanding of what the banking industry entails. We seek to inspire youth inclined towards a career in banking and encourage them as aspiring professionals with the information they need in advance of major life decisions. We feel that experiential engagement is of the highest value in this regard and look forward to welcoming more students to our branches in the near future”.
The visit was organized to complement project work in marketing, business administration, and entrepreneurship for Grade 11 students from ISM’s Department of Commerce and Humanities. Students were split in three groups, each visiting one branch in MBD, Ruwi and Watayya, where branch managers greeted and led them on a tour before their sessions began.
On his part, Dr. Rajeev Kumar Chauhan, Principal of Indian School Muscat, commented, “Our students’ visit to Bank Sohar provided a great opportunity for them to complete ongoing projects with experience from a leading local bank and highlights from qualified professionals. Books may be able to offer the foundation on any given discipline, but infusing experiential learning is an important addition for students at this stage of their learning journey. Bank Sohar’s direct involvement with entrepreneurs in the local market, as well as its in-house expertise in marketing and business administration provided a valuable learning experience for our students. Indian School Muscat extends its sincere thanks to Bank Sohar for hosting us”.
Bank Sohar’s recent visits echo similar initiatives undertaken across Oman with the objective of transferring sustainable knowledge to youth. The bank has further opened its doors to students at the end of their university degrees through the launch of ‘Tomohi’ – Enhancing Omani Youth Skills Programme. This has delivered a first-of-its-kind one-year internship scheme aimed at enhancing the employability of young Omanis educated in a relevant field, aspiring to become future banking professionals.
